Course Syllabi @WSB
All UW-Madison courses are required to have a syllabus in order to meet accreditation requirements. At WSB, all instructors are expected to create syllabi that meet the federal requirements (see below), distribute them with students, and submit them for compliance review at the beginning of each semester.
Steps to making your syllabus compliant
Please follow the steps below to ensure your syllabus complies with the requirements set by campus for accreditation. Final syllabus format is up to individual instructors, but the required elements from the syllabus template must be included as part of accreditation requirements.
- Review the Course Syllabi at UW-Madison guidance to learn about current syllabus requirements (you can download a template here as well).
- Retrieve the most recent version of your syllabus and revise as necessary to include ALL required elements.
- Review your course learning outcomes and include them in your syllabus. Learning Outcomes should match the approved Learning Outcomes listed in LUMEN and are the minimum required for the course. Instructors may add additional outcomes, as they deem necessary.
- Before the first day of class, submit the final revised syllabus using the Submit WSB Syllabus button on your Canvas course home page. Teaching & Learning Support will conduct syllabus compliance reviews and request revisions as needed.
Important!
All WSB courses are required to have their own syllabus! Please review the scenarios below to ensure you are submitting compliant syllabi.
- A single lecture course with several discussion sections (i.e., TA-led) requires only one syllabus. Each section number and meeting time should be clearly indicated.
- The same course offered in different modalities (e.g., in-person vs. online), at different times (e.g., one section on M-W-F vs. one section on T-Th), or taught by different instructors all require their own syllabus document.
- Courses that are cross-listed as undergraduate- and graduate-level must clearly indicate additional graduate-level outcomes and expectations.
